Shivcharran Hulasie Announces Publication of ‘Oddities’
The play’s main characters are the Founder and Donut. The Founder’s thoughts are portrayed in two manners: one in the form of a voice that enters and fades while he imbibes from a bottle of cheap wine in a brown paper sack, and the other speaks through a cast of characters, who all assume independent archetypes of the Jester, the Paranoid, the Sad, the Profound and the Practical.
Donut represents innocence on the verge of going astray into doubt, despair and darkness, as she is the one who initially perceives that there is something grave and ominous lurking about. She does not fear the archetype of death or the presence of the martyr.
"Cherishing life over the moments before suicide is the prevailing point of this play," says Hulasie. "Even when one is acknowledging one’s demise, there is a mark and light of grace that still exists, a voice from the canyon that shouts out with the willingness to live in vigilance."
