Shleppers Supports 2015 Cheryl Diamond NYC 5K Schlep for Israel’s Rabin Medical Center
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 13, 2015 -- On Sunday, June 21, over 350 supporters gathered on a warm Sunday morning in downtown Manhattan to run, walk, or volunteer in the 5K to help raise money and awareness for breast and ovarian cancer and help support the Davidoff Cancer Center and the BRCA Gene Multidisciplinary Clinic at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center. The event was co-sponsored by Shleppers Moving & Storage, American Self Storage, Central Synagogue, Congregation Emanu-El, El Al Airlines, Genetech, IDB Bank, Shiboleth, StorageBlue and Tamid: The Downtown Synagogue. “It was the memory of my mother Hadassah, who had breast cancer twice,” said Dr. Joshua Plaut, who is the Executive Director of American Friends of Rabin Medical Center, when asked what prompted him to organize the NYC 5K SCHLEP.
“One in seven Jewish women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime,” said Plaut. The race attracted runners of all ages and all parts of the country. Runners came from as far away as England and Hawaii to participate in this event. Ages of the participants ranged from 3-year-old Carmel Snir to 92-year-old Grace Salant, who completed the entire course in just under one hour and has participated in the SCHLEP for the past five years. Jonathan Schindel and Brittany Hayes were the race winners with astonishing times of 14:31 and 17:07 respectively.
The event was overwhelmingly successful for AFRMC, the New York-based non-profit that organized this event. The NYC 5K SCHLEP raised almost all of its donations online for the BRCA Multidisciplinary Clinic at the Rabin Medical Center. Donations were received from across the globe including Baltimore, Seattle, Houston, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Hawaii, Boston, Miami, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Chicago, North Carolina, Atlanta, Denver, Madison, Anchorage, San Francisco, Memphis, and Telluride. International donations came in from as far away as Singapore, Manchester, Toronto, Tel Aviv, and Johannesburg.
All proceeds and donations from the NYC 5K SCHLEP directly benefit the BRCA Gene Multidisciplinary Clinic serving women at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer, as well as funding research to find cures for breast and ovarian cancers at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center’s Davidoff Cancer Center- a world class facility for the treatment and prevention of cancer. The SCHLEP also supports a nutritional intervention study to determine if nutrients in cruciferous vegetables can decrease breast cancer in BRCA gene mutation carriers, thus saving lives of this high-risk population. Breast and ovarian cancers are the most common cancers afflicting women in the United States and Israel. One in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually.
"All of us at the American Friends Rabin Medical Center want to extend our deepest gratitude to the Shleppers team for the exceptional job done with the logistical setup, breakdown and route coordination for the 2015 NYC 5K Schlep" comments Dr. Joshua Plaut. "This is our fifth year of the NYC 5K SCHLEP and we expect it to get even bigger and better each year. The fact that Shleppers donated these services saved our organization thousands of dollars and made it a lot easier. Many thanks to the entire Shleppers team for a job well done, and for helping our organization in its mission to cure breast and ovarian cancer. Their donation of services truly helps us come closer to achieving this mission."
"We were privileged and delighted to take part in supporting the American Friends Rabin Medical Center in the NYC 5K SCHLEP," comments Shleppers President, Jason Friedland. "They not only have a great name for their walk, but also have an important mission to find a cure for breast cancer and ovarian cancer-- it's a truly worthy cause."
