SHNNY Honors Capitol Hall, an OCV Architects Rehabilitation Project, as “Residence of the Year”
New York, NY (PRWEB) October 20, 2016 -- On October 13, 2016, the Supportive Housing Network of New York (SHNNY) celebrated Capitol Hall, a supportive housing Single Room Occupancy (SRO) on Manhattan's Upper West Side ran by Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard), by honoring the rehabilitation project by Oaklander, Coogan and Vitto Architects, PC (OCV) with an “Outstanding Residence of the Year” award. Laura Mascuch of SHNNY presented the award to Stephan Russo, Executive Director of Goddard.
Capitol Hall provides 202 units of supportive housing on Manhattan's Upper West Side to men and women vulnerable to homelessness because of their age, income, or disability. It was one of the first buildings in the late 1970s in New York City to be secured and developed as supportive housing for this at-risk group. Almost 40 years later, the rehabilitation ensures that Capitol Hall will continue to serve its residents and the community for years to come.
Completed in 2015, the gut rehabilitation work was spearheaded by OCV's partner Richard Vitto and built by Notias Construction, with Rockabill as construction consultant, through a three-year, tenant-in-occupancy construction plan which rehabilitated and upgraded the existing arrangement of shared bathrooms and kitchens to one in which each unit is provided with its own private kitchette and bathroom. Tenants now enjoy the private use of basic facilities with continued access to community spaces. Offices and community rooms were also improved and expanded. Through a clever repurposing of the building’s interior courtyard, space which was once used as trash storage was transformed into a new skylit community room.

About Goddard Riverside Community Center
Goddard Riverside Community Center serves some 17,000 people each year through 26 programs on the Upper West Side and throughout Manhattan. Founded in 1959 with the merger of two historic settlement houses, Riverside Community House (1887) and Goddard Neighborhood Center (1892), the new agency moved to the heart of the West Side Urban Renewal Area, the largest urban renewal area in the country, consisting of 20 square blocks from West 87th Street to West 97th Street and from Central Park West to Amsterdam Avenue. In addition to starting a number of the programs and services still in operation today, the center became deeply involved in the issues of affordable housing that were central to the urban renewal process.
