About Contact Lens Health Week
CDC, in close collaboration with partners, has organized Contact Lens Health Week as a strategy to increase public awareness and promote healthy contact lens wear and care. Increased awareness about the importance of proper contact lens hygiene can encourage contact lens wearers to adopt healthy habits that can reduce their chances of getting an eye infection.
This year’s observance theme is titled “Healthy Habits Mean Healthy Eyes”. Contact lens health messages that Shofner Vision Center will be sharing three key areas:
1. Healthy contact lens hygiene habits
2. Proper use, care, and storage of contact lenses and supplies
3. Regular visits to an eye care provider
Who’s at Risk for Eye Infections?
“Basically everyone wearing lenses is at risk,” says Dr. Stewart Shofner. A Lancet study showed that people who wear daily contact lenses run a 1 in 100 risk of developing bacterial keratitis, an infection that can lead to a permanent loss of vision. People who abuse contacts by wearing them overnight or improperly caring for their lenses have an even larger risk.
According to one study, (WebMD Health News), over 80% of contact lens wearers surveyed prior to an eye exam believed they followed good lens wear and care practices, but only 2% actually complied with most recommended lens hygiene steps.
Dr. Kevin Johnson, an expert in contact lens fitting, states “It is imperative for parents of young adults that wear contact lenses to always follow the AOA recommendations, not just when it’s convenient.” Dr. Johnson adds, by not following proper procedures, contact wearers put their eye health at risk for developing infections.
AOA Recommendations
• Always wash and dry your hands before handling contact lenses.
• Clean lenses often, as recommended by your eye doctor. Rub the lenses with your fingers and rinse thoroughly before soaking lenses overnight in sufficient multi-purpose solution to completely cover the lenses.
• Use only fresh solution every time to clean and store contacts. Never top off old solution with new because the active ingredient in some solutions can break down over time. This is also why contact lens solutions should never be used after the discard date on the bottle has passed.
• Never use tap water in any area of lens care, including rinsing the lens and lens case. Tap water may contain microorganisms that can cause eye infection.
• Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace your case at least every three months. Clean the case after each use and keep it open and dry between cleaning.
• Never swim in lenses or wear them in a hot tub.
