Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks to Host ABA Championship Finals
Shreveport, LA (PRWEB) March 20, 2014 -- Joe Newman, chief executive officer of the American Basketball Association (ABA), this week announced that the Shreveport-Bossier City Mavericks will host the 2014 ABA National Championship Finals in April. Play-off competition will begin on Thursday, April 10 at Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, La, where all play-off games will be held. The eight teams at the top of the ABA Power Rankings will compete in the play-offs.
Rankings for the week ending on March 16 place the Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks and Jacksonville Giants as the #1 and #2 teams in the ABA, followed by #3 the South Florida Gold, #4 the Bay Area Matrix, # 5 the Arizona Scorpions, and # 6 the Chicago Steam. The # 7 and #8 seeds will be determined after the completions of Wild Card Playoffs that are currently being played throughout the country.
Competition is expected to be fierce heading into the Final Four, especially between the Mavericks and the Giants. The Mavericks and the Giants, ranking # 1 and #2, each have earned a bye into the Final Four on Saturday night’s game. Both teams hold back-to-back National Championships – the Mavericks won in 2010 and 2011, and the Giants won in 2012 and 2013 – but the powerhouses have not met at center court since the Mavericks’ victory over the Giants in the 2011 playoffs.
“We’re heading towards an inevitable showdown in the playoffs between the Mavericks and Giants,” said Newman. “But there are quite a few other teams that have their eyes on the Championship and cannot wait to make the challenge in Shreveport.”
The teams that are ranked #5, #6, #7 and #8 going into the play-offs will compete beginning Thursday, April 10, with the emerging winners meeting the #3 and #4 ranked teams at center court on Friday, April 11. Those winners will play the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the Final Four on Saturday, April 12. Competition continues on Sunday, April 13, when the top two teams vie for the Championship title in the best two out of three games.
Play-off, Final Four and Championship tickets will be available at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum ticket office daily, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., March 31-April 5 and April 7-9. April 10-15, tickets will be available at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum ticket office, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.
All games of the 2014 ABA Championship Finals will be Live Streamed on ESPN3. All games will air Central Standard Time.
