There are many benefits to opting for engineered core plywood as opposed to strictly veneer-core plywood. Veneer – core panels are made by laying up layers, or plies, of wood so that the grain direction in each ply runs at right angles to the one next to it. Cross-grain construction is what gives plywood its strength and dimensional stability. This has been a cabinetry staple for over 3 decades.
Unfortunately over time, plywood manufacturers have reduced the thickness of outer hardwood veneers used on plywood with wood cores. Quality concerns developed with this change, which included grain or core transfer where the ply just under the veneer would transfer to the outside or exposed side of the veneer as well as cracking of that ply then transferring through the outer veneer.
