SLCC, KUER Bringing Selected Shorts to Grand Theatre Stage
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) November 12, 2014 -- Salt Lake Community College and KUER will present the popular public radio show Selected Shorts live on November 15, 7 p.m. at the historic Grand Theatre.
Film and TV stars Parker Posey, David Strathair, Kirsten Vangsness and Christina Pickles will bring to life stories by established and emerging writers, with KUER’s Doug Fabrizio as host for the evening. The performance will be recorded live for KUER’s audience.
“Ticket sales were brisk for this unique event,” said SLCC Public Relations Director Joy Tlou. “The Grand is a 1,100-seat venue, and it will be filled with people who enjoy the intimate story-telling medium of radio and accomplished actors bringing their favorite works of fiction to life right in front of them.”
Selected Shorts is a product of New York-based Symphony Space, WNYC Radio and Public Radio International (PRI). The radio show began in 1985 and sells out performances at the Peter Sharp Theater at Symphony Space on Broadway. Classic and new stories are chosen around a specific theme for each show and read aloud by actors from stage, screen and television.
“I wanted to bring that experience to Salt Lake City,” said Gayle Ewer, marketing and community engagement manager at KUER. “It’s one of my favorite programs.”
By KUER joining forces with SLCC, Ewer continues a relationship that has brought National Public Radio’s Ari Shapiro, PRI’s Science Friday with Ira Flatow and more recently NPR On the Media’s Brooke Gladstone to audiences at the Grand. KUER is a charter member of NPR.
“We love this partnership,” Ewer said. “Part of our mission is to connect with the community. We feel that by bringing NPR personalities to Salt Lake City we’re making public radio more accessible to the community. The fact that SLCC can partner on so many events means we can do that much more. Our missions align perfectly – it’s kind of a dream partnership.”
Ewer also happens to love the Grand Theatre’s historic and aesthetic appeal as well as its size. “For me,” she said, “It’s the perfect happy medium for a theatre – intimate but not too small.”
Salt Lake Community College’s Grand Theatre, adjacent to the new Center for Arts and Media, was chosen by Sundance Institute to be a screening venue during the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. SLCC’s Center is a state-of-the-industry facility with 130,000 square feet of additional space at its South City Campus, 1575 South State Street in Salt Lake City. World-class features include a 2,000 square-foot television studio and control room, a 3,000 square-foot film stage, a 36-seat screening room, three MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) classrooms, 22 editing bays, an animation lab, radio station and a recording studio with 64 channels for collaboration in as many locations throughout the building. The new center, which is physically connected to Innovations High School, serves an estimated 9,000 students and brings together 17 programs under one roof for SLCC’s School of Arts, Communication and New Media.
