smarTours Finds Nearly Two-thirds of Women Willing to Travel Alone for Pleasure; of Those Not Willing to Travel Alone Majority Would Travel as Part of a Group Tour
More Than Half of Married Women Willing to Travel Alone; Perhaps Explaining the Declining Divorce Rate in the U.S.*
NEW YORK, Jan. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- According to a new survey from smarTours, the leading provider of affordable trips to bucket list destinations, nearly two-thirds (62 percent) of women are willing to travel alone for pleasure including more than half of married women are willing to travel alone. For this survey, smarTours surveyed more than 1,400 travelers on their travel companion preferences. Of the 38 percent of women not interested in traveling alone for pleasure, 62 percent of those surveyed said they would be willing to travel alone as part of a group tour.
Women not in relationships are even more open to traveling alone for pleasure, particularly divorced women. 71 percent of non-married (and not in long-term relationships) women said they are willing to travel alone. 77 percent of divorced women and 62 percent of widowed women said they are willing to travel alone. Divorced female travelers who aren't willing to travel alone are most open to traveling alone as part of a group as 75 percent reported interest in traveling alone as part of a group tour.
Additional smarTours survey findings included:
- No one wants to travel with their family- only 8 percent of surveyed travelers (both genders and of any marital status) expressed interest in traveling with their families (not including their significant other).
- Women are willing to travel alone at almost the same rate as men- 61 percent of surveyed men said they are willing to travel alone for pleasure compared to 62 percent of women surveyed.
"This survey verifies our belief that an increasing number of women are open to and interested in traveling alone to destinations across the globe, and for reasons of safety, ease, access, and connectedness, they are choosing escorted tours," said Kendra Guild, Director of Product & Operations for smarTours. "We launched our new women-only tours earlier this year to meet this growing interest among women of all ages open to traveling alone or with other women as part of a larger group tour. Women are eager to experience their bucket list destinations, and we are happy to coordinate all the logistics of getting them to these locations, and getting even more immersed with the local culture once they get there. We hope to encourage and empower women to travel the world and connect with women across the globe."
