SME’s Mfg4 Event Offers Student Program to Inspire Interest in Manufacturing and STEM Careers
DEARBORN, Mich. (PRWEB) April 18, 2014 -- In an effort to reach and encourage students interested in manufacturing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), SME and the SME Education Foundation are offering a program designed for middle school and high school students at the Mfg4 event at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, Conn., from May 6 to 8.
“High-tech careers in manufacturing offer exciting possibilities,” said Pam Hurt, manager of industry and workforce development, SME Education Foundation. “As the technology and innovations in manufacturing continue to evolve, this student program, and others like it, will help showcase the opportunities available.”
Mfg4 is an optimal place for students to learn more about the variety of jobs in manufacturing firsthand and engage with professionals who are in the aerospace and defense, medical manufacturing and micromanufacturing industries. The student program will feature access to the show floor, a tour held at TRUMPF in Farmington, Conn., presentations and hands-on activities.
Two SME Education Foundation PRIME (Partnership Response in Manufacturing Education) schools in Massachusetts — the Worcester Technical School and the Westfield Vocational Technical High School — will have students attending both days. These students will serve as mentors during the hands-on activities and will be escorts for the groups when they visit the booths on the show floor.
“Manufacturing is vital to the U.S. and global economy, and it is important that we educate students on its value and the success they can find as manufacturing professionals,” said Jamie Price, president of Sandvik Coromant, which is the Mfg4 student program Platinum Sponsor. “Because Mfg4 offers so much industry and technical diversity, it’s a great setting for middle and high school students to learn more about manufacturing.”
The student program will run for two days, with the middle school portion on May 6 and the high school day on May 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
