SME & Sierra College CACT Sponsor “Building Your Pipeline to Skilled Labor” Luncheon on Feb. 27 in Stockton
(PRWEB) February 12, 2015 -- The SME Sacramento Valley Chapter 145 will offer a program on “Building Your Pipeline to Skilled Labor” on Feb. 27 from 11:30 am to 3 pm with lunch provided by Sierra College Center for Applied Competitive Technologies(CACT). The meeting will be held at Brookside Golf and Country Club, located at 3603 Saint Andrews Drive in Stockton, CA. The goal of the event is to encourage companies to become key workforce development partners throughout the region. If businesses choose to initiate processes to build a workforce pipeline, the SME chapter will help them make the necessary connections. To get the effort started, presenters will discuss their experiences with the intern and apprentice programs.
Speaker Dick Herman serves on the Board of Directors for the California Tooling & Machining Apprenticeship Association. At this SME meeting, he will review Northern California’s model technical machinist apprenticeship training programs. He is also the President and founder of 101MFG – a private network of manufacturing executives founded in Sonoma County and now counting more than 400 executives throughout the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.
In addition, Nell Papavasiliou, Director, Valley Industry Partnership (VIP), will describe the unique partnership between leading companies and the Lyles College of Engineering at Fresno State University. Together they provide internship opportunities for qualified junior and senior level college students. The goal of the VIP program is to provide rich, well-rounded, education for engineering students by giving them real-world work experiences.
According to Michael Bell, president, SME Sacramento Valley, a key focus of the chapter is to facilitate workforce development throughout the region. “The industry forum is a great opportunity for companies to learn about internship and apprenticeships program models,” said Bell. “With the help of SME, each business can tailor a workforce education program to meet its specific industry needs. In addition, SME appreciates the relationship we have with Sierra College and other academic and professional institutions that are helping us define ways to produce and retain a pipeline of qualified workers.”
