Smithsonian’s National Zoo Asks PLAYTIME to Recreate Iconic Outdoor Playground – The Pizza Playground
Washington, DC (PRWEB) September 18, 2013 -- The Pizza Playground at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is an iconic playground where tourists and locals have been snapping pictures of their children since 2004. After nearly 10 years of crawling and climbing, the old pizza needed to be replaced.
Ledo Pizza stepped up to sponsor a new play area but, because Ledo Pizza makes square pizzas, this new version needed to be square.
The Smithsonian asked PLAYTIME for help. PLAYTIME created a square, 20-foot-by-20 foot Pizza Playground to replace the circular 18-foot-wide Pizza Playground installed at the Zoo in 2004. The challenge, says PLAYTIME’s Chris Davis, was to do it in a way that reminded visitors of their favorite elements from the previous pizza.
“We designed a completely new soft play pizza but visitors will absolutely see the similarities to the pizza they’ve been playing on since 2004,” says Davis. “It is square, but we included many of the popular features from the old pizza on this new pizza, such as a larger-than-life-sized tomato and olive that kids can climb.”
The Zoo’s Pizza Garden, which surrounds the playground, also continues to give children and families a taste of conservation and sustainability. The garden and interactive exhibit still serve up fun facts about pizza ingredients, from sauce to box, and the animals that are important to making many pizza ingredients.
“Children have been enjoying the Pizza Playground for nearly a decade,” says Davis. “It’s an icon at this incredible zoo. PLAYTIME was honored to work with the Smithsonian to develop a new pizza for the Pizza Playground.”
