Smoothwall's New S14 Appliance Scales up Web Filtering to 10Gbps Networks
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) August 07, 2015 -- This July, Smoothwall unveiled a new hardware appliance for web filtering and firewalls that is compatible with 10 Gbps infrastructure: the S14. Selected to be a replacement for the retiring S12, the S14 not only handles 10 Gbps infrastructure, but also boasts substantial gains in performance.
“The S14 has a new architecture that allows us to scale performance well above the S12,” says Phil Smith, Head of Product. “It provides a platform for us to build a wide range of high performance filtering services.”
High-performance filtering is essential to success in an increasingly security-intensive web environment. The demand on resources generated by the increase in the use of encryption across the web reinforces this trend; Increasing filtering software performance, however, is only half of the equation. Upgrading hardware is also essential to delivering a modern, scalable web filtering experience. The ability to scale into higher bandwidth infrastructure is key to keeping up with the continued growth anticipated in the K12 education space.
In keeping with the trend Smith says, “We’ll also be releasing more hardware enhancements throughout the year to the base S14 platform - increasing both performance and capacity.”
The move from the S12 to the S14 was calibrated to coincide with a shift in customer needs across the American educational web filtering market. Owing to last year’s changes to infrastructure funding prescribed by the E-Rate modernization order and recommendations put forward by the SEDTA, the State Educational Technology Directors Association, districts across the country are upgrading their networks. This expansion in network capacity is propelled by the increased use of 1:1 and BYOD programs in schools, making the need for 10 Gbps networks is inevitable.
S14s are all equipped with 10 Gbps fibre NICs, and have more than a 50% performance improvement over the existing S12 devices.
The S4 and the S8 appliances will remain unaffected.
