Sochi and SOGI – American Bar Association Panel, John Marshall Professor to Discuss Effect of Russia’s Anti-Gay Law on the Sochi Olympics
(PRWEB) January 31, 2014 -- LGBT persons living in Russia have faced increased attacks and discrimination following Russia’s adoption of an anti-gay propaganda law.
A panel during the American Bar Association Midyear Meeting in Chicago will discuss responses to that law, including effects on corporate sponsors of the Olympic Games, and what efforts can be made to improve the human rights situation for LGBT persons in Russia.
Professor Mark E. Wojcik of The John Marshall Law School in Chicago, a commissioner on the ABA Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI), will lead a discussion on the Russian legislation, athletes’ free speech rights at international events and the protection of human rights.
The panel will be held Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, the same day as the opening ceremonies of the Sochi
Winter Olympics. The panelists are:

- Steven J. Thompson, partner, Ungaretti & Harris LLP, who has represented athletes in Olympic selection disputes
