Solar-Trak Launches a Solar Powered Pet GPS Tracker for $99 on Kickstarter
Brisbane, Australia (PRWEB) November 14, 2013 -- Start-up company Solar-Trak sets its sights on improving the Pet GPS market by creating a device that’s a few steps ahead of the rest. The resulting system uses solar power to automatically charge the battery, fits on any existing dog or cat collar, weighs less than 2 ounces (56 grams), and sells at only $99.
“We listened to what people like and don't like about the existing trackers in the market,” says Dallas Wood, CEO of Solar-Trak, “and it was quite clear - people don’t’ like having to detach it to charge the battery, it can’t be too big & heavy, and it has to look great.” Solar-Trak is the first to accommodate all of these market requests.
The GPS communicates a pet’s location back to an iPhone or Android phone app close to ‘real-time’ using a familiar Google Maps interface. The app will be available free to Solar-Trak users through the iTunes and Android App Store. For those who don't have a smartphone, the system can still communicate using SMS messaging, and a laptop / desktop to check GPS locations.
Additionally, the unit comes packaged with a solar powered RF transponder that communicates with the GPS to keep it ‘inactive’ while the pet is safely at home. Combined with the solar cells on the GPS, the transponder is one of the secrets to keeping the battery usage low and preventing the need to recharge.
Although Solar-Trak is targeting existing GPS users that maybe unhappy with their product, this is only a small percentage of the intended reach. With 4 out of 5 consumers surveyed not having heard of a GPS systems for pets, and over 5 million pets going missing in the United States every year alone, Solar-Trak has an opportunity to play a significant part in reducing these numbers and growing awareness of the technology.
Solar-Trak has developed to an advanced prototype stage over the past 12 months and the team are turning to crowd funding to bring it to open market. The Kickstarter campaign runs until December 20th 2013 & aims to raise $70,000 for mass production of the product.
