Solomon Covers Natalia Kills' "Saturday Night" In New Music Video
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 05, 2014 -- Over the weekend on Saturday night, genre-bending, electronic hip-pop recording artist Solomon premiered his unique music video for his cover of the personal, Jeff Bhasker produced “Saturday Night” by Cherrytree Records singer-songwriter Natalia Kills. Working with longtime collaborator DJ Shaw-t, the artist shapes the song to fit his own style by re-producing the beat and adding a rap verse. Shot in New York City by director Mikhail Torich, the visual is set inside of a Polaroid amongst a collage of personal artifacts from Solomon's life. "Saturday Night" is part of a 6-track EP available for free download.

Recorded during current promotion for his critically-acclaimed third extended play, Le Garçon, which was a featured as one of iTunes February “New Artist 2014” releases, Solomon uses the new and unexpected cover release as an example of the type of material fans can expect on his upcoming debut album, Why Boys Cry. Said to be similar to much of the songs recorded for the effort so far, in the sense of being autobiographical, the cover represents more ease for the artist to share his personal story with listeners. Including his own coming out story.
"One night I was going through my old LiveJournal, and stumbled across a photo of me at the age of 17. It was the night I ran away from home, because I was too afraid of telling my parents I was gay. That's when the line in the song, "You don't know what it's like, to be 17 with no place to go," really rang true for me. That's when I knew I had to do this song. It felt right." - Solomon
While recording his debut album, Why Boys Cry, Solomon shares how certain topics he steered clear of in his earlier songs, as they were too personal to write about, but is finally ready to share now on his debut LP. Topics ranging from suicide, depression, substance abuse and him coming out to his parents at the age of 17.
"I didn't think I had this traumatic coming out story. I ran away from home, and when I came back I told my parents and it was fine. But there was tension which eventually led to me being kicked out of my home before I could graduate high school. The years that transpired after were traumatic. I was exposed to a lot of darkness, evil people and my eyes were opened."
Last year Solomon wrote a very personal piece for Advocate.com in which he outlined his personal sturggles with self worth, being biracial, being arrested, his father in prison and more. The always poignant artist lets listeners in even more as he retains the overall essence of Kills’ tragic “Saturday Night” giving the number a touch of his hip-hop background with an added edgy verse. “Beautiful boys with criminal cases, waking up to nameless faces,” he sings.
In late March, Solomon filmed the accompanying music video with friends on location throughout New York City and inside a local music establishment. The director, Mikhail Torich, captured the artist’s emotional experience of living in the chaos of New York and becomes a visual representation of his interpretation of the song being “kind of like a sad celebration.”
“I remember distinctly, living in New York being depressed, and the only thing I could do to get me out of that funk was to put on my dancing shoes and go out,” Solomon says. “I got into a lot of trouble. I would get into fights. I’d get arrested. It was intense.”
Solomon, the up and coming, unapologetic, experimental artist, came onto the music scene in 2008 with the release of two well-received mixtapes, followed by three diverse EPs, including the pop-leaning Shades of Black and The Love Rocker Project. This all leads up to the anticipated release of his first official album, set for a late 2014 release.
