Songs to Educate and Thirty Five Elementary School Children Celebrate Earth Day in Educational Performance
(PRWEB) April 24, 2014 -- When a group of Kindergarten students get together to "theaterize" the solar system, the water cycle and the human relationship with the Earth, agile young bodies and minds become learning dynamos!
At Carlos Gilbert Elementary in Santa Fe, New Mexico, learning about the home planet Earth happens through a compelling approach. Songs to Educate, a versatile education resource, just concluded a 12-week arts integrated exploration of the planet entitled "We Are Here", culminating with a celebratory Earth Day performance.
The performance tells a story. It begins with a song called "We Are Here" which locates the human race in the Universe as a starting place. But the performance not only covers the big Universe 'out there', but the extraordinary universe 'inside us' as well. Founders of Songs To Educate, Melanie and Paul Zeir, have found that “children get the idea right away. It is not abstract to them.”
The story moves on to the Solar System with a song called "Riddle of the Planets". Each verse in the song gives clues about a particular planet and then asks the question: "What planet am I?" The children act out the entire Solar System in choreographed dance, singing the clues and shouting out the answers with gusto.
Then the narrative comes closer to home, arriving on planet Earth with a medley of songs. One of these tunes is entitled "The Water Cycle Story Dance", which is arts integrated education at its core!
Imagine acting out the water cycle as water, dancing through the phases of the water cycle. Clouds, drifting across the sky, becoming rain flow into streams, then become rivers flowing into lakes and oceans, and then evaporate into clouds to begin the cycle again.
Melanie and Paul’s experience over the years has shown that children love learning this way. Arts Integrated Education brings the lessons and diagrams out of the textbooks, off the 'smart boards' and into life, where the student can touch it, feel it, know it!
The theatrical tribute to the Earth culminates with an evocative love song to Mother Earth entitled "Champions of Your Song". Here the children show just how proud they are to be a defender and champion of the Earth. It is especially moving to feel what radiates from young lives who instinctively know the Earth is alive and needs human protection, care and companionship.
