Sound Seal Takes Noise Control Beyond the Curtain
Agawam Ma (PRWEB) September 24, 2014 -- As part of an on-going commitment to address challenging customer needs, Sound Seal has developed an innovative noise control enclosure that has reduced noise levels in a plastics manufacturing plant by 22dB(A).
Like many manufacturers, one plastics producer generated a large amount of waste. The waste was recycled by loading it into a granulator, which ground it into tiny pellets for reuse in other finished products. But a significant problem was detected at the plant: noise from the granulator often reached an unacceptable peak of 110dB(A).
Employees did not want to go near the granulator. Waste piled up; potential raw materials were being squandered. The threat of an insurance claim or an OSHA violation grew every day. A quick solution was needed; Sound Seal was contacted.
Sound Seal engineers determined that while a standard metal acoustical enclosure would help reduce the extreme noise level, the operator would still need hearing protection when loading the machine. The metal enclosure would also restrict access.
The design team began with the BBC-13-2” composite material. A feed flap was added to protect the operator and eliminate the need for hearing protection when loading the machine. An essential ventilation system was also configured.
Because Sound Seal provides structural framework as well as acoustical curtain materials, the engineers developed a double track enclosure (allowing access at any point in the enclosure), The installation team set up the custom enclosure in only four hours.
The results are in: Management has reported that materials are now quickly recycled, employees are satisfied, and the granulator is finally the productive machine it was intended to be.
