South Carolina Attorney Supports Child Passenger Safety Week in Its Efforts to Save Lives
Columbia, SC (PRWEB) September 03, 2015 -- Injury lawyer Bert Louthian praised the upcoming Child Passenger Safety Week, which focuses on preventing child injuries and deaths in vehicular accidents through the proper use of automotive child seating restraints.
“The leading cause of death for children ages 2 to 14 years is motor vehicle crashes,” Louthian commented. “Many injuries and deaths could be prevented by the correct use of car seats, boosters, and seat belts. Child Passenger Safety Week, which runs this year from September 13 through 19, emphasizes this fact.”
A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) survey found that parents and caregivers often make several common mistakes when using and installing car seats and booster seats. The same survey revealed that, while 20 percent did not read any of the included instructions on how to properly install their child’s safety restraints, a full 90 percent of those surveyed stated that they were confident the restraints were installed correctly.
“Child safety restraints do no good, and can even do harm, if they are not installed correctly,” Louthian pointed out. “Parents have resources which can help them ensure that they are installing their car seats and booster seats properly. In the Columbia, South Carolina, area alone, there are several locations where you can go to have your child restraint system checked by professionals. We at the Louthian Law Firm urge all parents and caregivers to do so.”
Child car seat recalls are also an issue. In mid-August of 2015, the child car seat maker Britax announced a recall of more than 200,000 seats because of a problem that could cause the seats’ shoulder straps to become loose. The recall affects seats manufactured between August 1, 2014, and July 29, 2015. So far, no injuries have been reported.
Louthian reminded parents and caregivers of the need to keep abreast of child safety seat recalls. “It is vitally important to make certain your child’s car seat or booster seat does not have a recall lodged against it. If it does, get the seat repaired at your earliest convenience, for the well-being of your child.”
