South Carolina Car Accident Lawyer at Matthews & Megna LLC Comments on Accident Risks on Rural Roads
Columbia, SC (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- Commenting on a news article ranking South Carolina’s rural roads as the deadliest in the nation, Ben Matthews of Matthews & Megna LLC said today that drivers need to do their part in preventing fatal accidents while traveling rural routes across the state.
Matthews, a car accident attorney in South Carolina, based his comments on a Post and Courier article published July 11 (“Report: Fatality rate on South Carolina's rural roads highest in nation”). According to the report, four people died on the rural roads in South Carolina for every 100 million miles of travel.
“Recent reports about South Carolina’s rural roads should serve as a call to action for our state officials and our drivers,” Matthews said. “Many of the state’s rural roadways are not properly maintained, and they lack safety features. While it’s up to the state to improve these rural roads, drivers can do their part by avoiding dangerous behavior such as speeding, drunk driving and distracted driving.”
The Post and Courier states that South Carolina’s rural roads have crash and fatal accident risks nearly six times higher than the non-rural roads and highways, according to statistics released by TRIP, a national transportation group. Furthermore, TRIP data also revealed 637 accident fatalities occurred on non-interstate roads in 2012.
State officials told the Post and Courier that increased development throughout lesser-populated areas of the state has placed greater strain on rural roads. According to the article, the state’s Department of Transportation (DoT) lacks the cash flow to address road hazards on rural roads.
“There’s no doubt that rural roads are in dire need of improvement, but it’s not clear when the roads will get the needed upgrades,” Matthews said. “That’s why it’s so important for drivers to do everything they can to keep themselves, their passengers and others using the roads safe from harm. People injured in accidents often face long-term medical bills. They’re often forced to miss work for an extended period of time. Their lives are turned upside-down.”
Matthews said that while road hazards may make some accidents seem unavoidable, injury victims who suspect driver negligence was a factor in their accident should contact a car accident lawyer immediately.
