Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) May 20, 2016 -- South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, closes its season series with the Steve Turre “Bones of Art” Sextet on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 8:00 PM. This concert will take place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the NSU campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Steve Turre is universally regarded as the foremost trombonist in jazz. In addition to his numerous “bests” in DownBeat, JazzTimes and Jazziz polls on that instrument, he also is renowned for his proficiency on conch shells garnering accolades in the Miscellaneous Instruments category in the same polls. The hard-swinging band he brings from New York to South Florida is an original creation of Steve’s paying homage to Art Blakey, the great hard-bop drummer and band leader, with whom all three trombonists in the band played in Art’s iconic Jazz Messengers band.
One of the world's preeminent jazz innovators, trombonist and conch shellist Steve Turre, has repeatedly won JazzTimes, Down Beat, and Jazziz magazines’ polls for Best Trombonist and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells). During his long career, he has worked mainly with conventional jazz ensembles. But he has had a desire to work with a three-trombone frontline sextet. Many jazz fans recall the Kai Winding-J.J. Johnson two and four trombone bands from the 1950s and ‘60s, but Steve has heard a unique three trombone sound in his mind and recruited two more Jazz Messenger alumni trombonists, Steve Davis and Kuumba Frank Lacy, for this special project.
Of course, Steve’s name for the band has a conscious connection to the rich jazz history. He says, ”’Bones of Art’ means we are artists of the trombone, but we all graduated from Art’s school, and of out of it we became not just instrumentalists, but composers, arrangers, and stylists.” Steve has learned his “Art” lessons well and communicates directly to his listeners through his sound and humanity.
