Spartan Race Shares Inspirational Story of Stabbing Victim Who Recovered from His Injuries to Complete the Reebok Spartan Sprint in Texas
Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) July 06, 2013 -- On July 6, obstacle racing series Spartan Race recounts the inspirational story of Spartan Racer Edward A. Puente, who recovered from stab injuries to complete a Spartan Race.
According to the Spartan blog, Puente was stabbed twice, once in his left abdomen and once in the chest. Puente was defending a friend who had been attacked. They were ending a late night celebrating the friend’s birthday in Austin, Texas when the attack took place.
Puente suffered serious injuries that hindered his mobility, forcing him to drop out of nursing school and leaving him unable to work. He recounts in the blog, “I lay in bed many days unable to move and depressed for some time, losing weight and muscle.”
Puente discovered Spartan Race the web, while searching for an activity to motivate him to get back into peak physical condition. Puente made the decision to sign up for a Spartan Race after “seeing the obstacles and how many different people, some with limitations were pushing themselves beyond what one could not imagine. It seemed like fun.”
Puente signed up for the Texas Sprint that took place this past May. He worked out, followed the Spartan Race WODs and even attended a workout with one of the founders of Spartan Race, Joe De Sena. When it came to the workout, it was “a dose of the Hurricane Heat,” Puente described. The workout activities included tossing sandbags, carrying full buckets of sand and hundreds of burpees.
Puente is fully recovered and has been exercising regularly since January. He has already completed the Texas Sprint, and plans on completing the Spartan Trifecta and making it into the Ultra Beast.
De Sena commented on Edward A. Puente’s inspirational story and work ethic. “Edward showed a lot of heart and dedication during the workout,” he said. “We are happy to hear that he has recovered from his injuries, and we will be rooting for him at our future Spartan Races.”
