Spectacular Results for the John E. du Pont “British Guiana” Collection Sold on June 27, 2014
Geneva, Switzerland (PRWEB) July 17, 2014 -- “In 40 years as auctioneer, I have never had the experience where every single lot was underbid to an astonishing multiple of the original estimate, leaving no lot unsold!” said David Feldman at the end of the historic auction of the John E. du Pont “British Guiana” Collection which has been held on June 27, 2014 in Geneva.
Following the sale of the famous One Cent Magenta on June 17 in New York by Sotheby’s for a record of USD 9.5 Million, the auction of the main collection of John E. du Pont was also an unbelievable success.
The sale featured highly competitive bidding from collectors in David Feldman’s auction room, on the phone as well as around the world via the Internet. With most lots opening at around the estimates, the bidding was intensive and fierce with multiple “under-bidders” on almost every lot; far from becoming discouraged, unsuccessful bidders became more determined as the auction progressed. Extensive bidding interest was worldwide, with notable activity from the United Kingdom, the Middle East, South Africa, France and the United States.
After no less than 3 1/2 hours, all 131 lots were sold for an amount exceeding EUR 6 million; over 5 times the original estimate!
Notable highlights:
Lot 60089 - 1856 Provisional 4 cents black on blue surface glazed, initials of postal clerk Wight “EDW”, cut octagonally, used on cover to Sophia’s Hope Estate in Mahaicony. An extremely important item of the issue, being the only known full cover with this stamp. Without doubt a Great exhibition and world rarity, one of the major items of the John E. du Pont collection.
