It does not require a hard hit, if taken at the wrong angle and high up in the first, second and third vertebra, these hits can be fatal. While these types of injuries are rare, as Mines later said, there are precautions that players can take.
Athletes should take pre-participation exams to physicians can ensure the player has full neck range-of-motion and there are no other risk factors involved, like a history of previous injury. Players should also receive adequate conditioning during practice and prior to any games, including strengthening head and neck muscles. Proper tackling techniques should also be included in training.
