SportsSignup Seeks to Protect the Health of Young Athletes With New Integrated Concussion Awareness and Training Module
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (PRWEB) January 21, 2015 -- SportsSignup (http://www.sportssignup.com/), a national leader in online management solutions for sports organizations, today announced it has integrated a proven concussion awareness and training module into its registration flow, providing parents, coaches and game officials with the information they need to prevent, recognize and respond to concussions.
The new training module is adopted from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Head’s Up to Concussion curriculum. Registrants are prompted to read certain educational materials, and are quizzed on what they learned. Those who achieve a score of 80 percent or higher will receive a Certificate of Completion for the course. Registrants can repeat the test as often as needed to pass.
“Nothing in youth sports is as important as player safety, and we’re proud to be known as innovators in that respect,” said Anthony Bruno, CEO of SportsSignup. “KidSafePlus® was the first fully integrated coach and volunteer background check management system on the market, and we’re very pleased to offer this concussion awareness and training module to our youth sports customers. We recognize that not all injuries can be avoided in competition, but we want to give coaches, parents and officials the tools they need to respond in a way that maximizes player safety and recovery. In some cases, these tools will help our customers meet insurance policy requirements that have become more stringent around traumatic head injuries.” To learn more about KidSafePlus® visit http://sportssignup.com/products/kidsafeplus-background-checks
According to the CDC, U.S. emergency departments treat more than 173,285 children 19 and under each year for sports-related injuries, including concussions. Many more injuries are treated in doctors’ offices and primary, acute care and sports medicine clinics. Children and teens are more likely to get a concussion and take longer to recover than adults.
“In recent years, leagues have struggled with new challenges associated with our children playing too many games and the resulting increase in injuries,” said Rich Christiano, President of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association, which has more than 100,000 soccer participants. “SportsSignup continues to seek and find innovative ways to mitigate risk and safeguard participants. We appreciate SportsSignup’s commitment to the wellbeing of young athletes.”
“This year we took the initiative to require concussion awareness and prevention training and certification of all of our 10,000-plus volunteers,” said Jim Eleftherion, Treasurer and Risk Management Chairman of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association. “New processes are often complicated and time-consuming to manage, but SportsSignup made it very easy and intuitive. The process is fully automated, and we know every volunteer who registers will have completed and passed the training and certification test.”
“Concussions are a real concern for any sports organization, so we were thrilled to hear that SportsSignup can now offer concussion training and testing to volunteers as part of their registration,” said David Dolan, Athletic Supervisor for the Florence (AL) Park & Recreation Department. “We usually hold coaches meetings to cover the information, but now they are trained and tested through SportsSignup.”
Over the past 10-plus years, SportsSignup has established itself an industry leader in online registration, e-commerce (MySportsStore®) and volunteer background checks (KidSafePlus®), and is committed to becoming a full-service solutions provider for youth sports leagues.
