Springbrook to Host Author Jesse Saperstein During Family Weekend
Oneonta, NY (PRWEB) August 19, 2014 -- On Saturday, September 20, Springbrook will welcome bestselling author and autism advocate, Jesse Saperstein for a lecture and book signing. The lecture is part of a three-day-long Family Weekend at the organization.
Saperstein—who has a form of autism commonly known as Asperger’s syndrome—decided to become a writer and advocate for people with autism after experiencing the social stigmatization and bullying that can sometimes affect autistic adults and children. His first book, a memoir entitled, Atypical: Life with Asperger’s in 20 1/3 Chapters, became an instant best seller due to the author’s unique talent for practical and engaging advice for a misunderstood demographic that often goes unnoticed. Saperstein’s most recent book, Getting a Life with Asperger’s, offers advice and support for people with autism who are in the midst of the difficult transition from youth to adulthood. The book offers insights for both people who live with autism and those who may not have a clear understanding of the disorder. Jesse Saperstein’s innovative ideas and unique talent for compelling lectures have earned him a place next to other great autism advocates, such as Temple Grandin. Jesse Saperstein will speak at 7 pm on September 20, in The School at Springbrook cafeteria. This lecture is free and open to the public.
Springbrook’s First Annual Family Weekend will be filled with activities and events aimed at educating and entertaining the family members, siblings, and participants who receive supports and services through the organization. Guests from the local community are expected to present workshops and lectures. Other events happening throughout the weekend include a variety of workshops ranging from navigating transitions to advocating at the local, state, and national levels, and effectively working with school districts. There will also be a family barbeque, featuring Oneonta’s famous Brooks’ BBQ, and kid-friendly activities such as games, bounce houses, and sibling workshops.
