Springbrook to Host Special Olympics Basketball Tournament
Oneonta, NY (PRWEB) May 06, 2014 -- Springbrook, a leading provider of supports for people with special needs, will host the Springbrook Invitational Special Olympics Basketball Tournament on Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
The Springbrook Invitational will mark the second time in the organization’s history that it has hosted a Special Olympics tournament. With the 2012 completion of the $22.5 million expansion of The School at Springbrook on the main campus, Springbrook has a state-of-the-art, regulation-size gymnasium enabling the Springbrook Scorpions basketball team to host tournament play, as well as an Olympic Village.
The tournament will take place at The School at Springbrook on the organization’s main campus at 105 Campus Drive, Oneonta, New York. Opening ceremonies will take place at 9:00 a.m., followed by games from 9:30-11:30 a.m., individual skills competition at 11:30 a.m., additional games from 12-3 p.m., and a three-point shoot out to close the day's festivities. In addition to the excitement of tournament play, attendees can look forward to concessions and an Olympic Village with arts, crafts, and activities for kids of all ages.
The Scorpions basketball team has been highly successful in Special Olympics tournaments this year. At their April 13, 2014 game at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Junior Varsity team took home the silver medal and Varsity took fourth place, while three teammates earned gold medals and one earned silver in individual skills competition. At their most recent tournament in New York City on April 26, 2014, the Varsity team took the silver medal. The Springbrook Invitational Tournament on May 10, 2014 will be the Junior Varsity team’s last tournament of the season, while the Springbrook Scorpions Varsity team will play its last tournament at the University of Buffalo on the weekend of June 6-8, 2014.
The Springbrook Invitational is sponsored by the Mirabito family, and Chobani, as well as the Russell family, The Daily Star, and Maines Paper and Food Service. Tournament sponsors and Springbrook CEO, Patricia Kennedy, will take part in opening ceremonies as well as present awards at closing ceremonies. This is event is free and open to the public.
