Springer Publishing Names Victoria Vaughan Dickson As Winner of 2014 Award in Geriatric/Gerontologic Nursing
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 06, 2014 -- Springer Publishing Company, an innovative nursing, gerontology, psychology, social work, counseling, public health, and rehabilitation publisher, today announced Victoria Vaughan Dickson, PhD, RN, CRNP, FAHA, as the winner of the Springer Publishing Company Geriatric/Gerontologic Award of a Distinguished Single Work of Research in Applied Geriatric Nursing. Dickson was nominated for her co-authorship of a 2014 article, “Building skill in heart failure self-care among community dwelling older adults: Results of a pilot study.” The award will be presented on the evening of November 6, at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA)’s Annual Scientific Meeting in Washington, DC.
Dr. Dickson’s area of research interest focuses on self-care (for instance, deciding when to take medication or act on symptoms) among older adults with cardiovascular disease, as well as on ethnic minority populations with heart failure and aging workers with coronary heart disease. Her goal is to develop interventions that will improve their health and quality of life. In this nomination article, Dr. Dickson’s and her co-authors’ study examined older adults living with heart failure in ethnically diverse communities, evaluating the outcome of an innovative type of intervention, in which lay health educators in senior centers taught the seniors fundamental self-care skills. They found the skill-building intervention improved self-care and knowledge. The study suggests that proactive intervention in a community setting, using lay health educators, may be useful across diverse populations and geographically varied settings.
Said Tara A. Cortes PhD, RN, FAAN, Executive Director, The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing: “Dr. Dickson’s research points to a new path forward for the health of older adults. These findings send a clear message: that by reaching seniors where they live, we can empower them to take action to protect their own health before their conditions damage their quality of life. For such crucial research, we are proud to present her with the Springer Award.”
The article, published in Patient Education and Counseling, is available online at: http://www.pec-journal.com/article/S0738-3991(14)00179-7/abstract.
Dr. Dickson’s primary teaching areas are Philosophical and Theoretical Perspectives of Nursing, PhD Advisement, and PhD candidacy and dissertation advisement. She is an American Heart Association Fuchs-Schoeck Research Fellow; a Fellow of the American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Nursing; a Brookdale Foundation Leadership in Aging Fellow; and received the 2012 ENRS Rising Star Research Award. She is an Assistant Professor at NYU College of Nursing.
The Springer Publishing Company Geriatric/Gerontologic Award has been presented annually every year since 1996. This year’s winner was nominated by a committee at the NYU College of Nursing, including: Dr. Cortes; Dean Eileen M. Sullivan-Marx, PhD, RN, FAAN; Deborah A.
