Springfield, MA Car Accident Lawyer Mark E. Salomone Comments On Fatal Interstate 91 Car Accident Report
Springfield, MA (PRWEB) December 13, 2013 -- A fatal accident that occurred after couch cushions apparently fell from a vehicle and onto a busy interstate highway serves as a tragic reminder that drivers are required by law to secure cargo to their vehicle, according to Mark E. Salomone of The Law Offices of Mark E. Salomone, a car accident attorney in Springfield, MA.
ABC 40 (“New Details Released in Fatal Crash,” November 11) reported that the early November accident occurred on Interstate 91 in Longmeadow after the driver of a Jeep collided with a tractor-trailer truck while swerving to avoid debris that state police believe fell off an open-back pickup truck carrying a couch.
“It’s critical that drivers throughout the state of Massachusetts remember that it’s the law to secure any form of cargo to your vehicle,” said Salomone, who represents victims of negligence and families who lost loved ones in accidents. “It’s not unusual to see debris on the highway. Sometimes drivers can successfully change lanes and avoid an accident. But as this case tragically illustrates, road debris can lead to a fatal accident. If you’re carrying something on your vehicle, make sure it’s securely fastened.”
According to ABC 40, State Police say tractor-trailers rarely cause debris on the highway. In most cases, pickup trucks or utility trailers are responsible for dropping cargo.
The ABC 40 report said that the 17-year-old driver of the Jeep died after he swerved his vehicle into a tractor-trailer, which caused his Jeep to burst into flames. State Police said they believe the driver was attempting to react to road debris – couch cushions – that fell off a pickup truck carrying a couch in its bed, the ABC 40 story said.
According to ABC 40, State Police Sergeant Al Joubert said that Massachusetts General Law requires that any type of cargo put inside a vehicle is secured. He said drivers who are using the highway need to anticipate that when traveling in excess of 55 miles per hour that objects can be blown out of the back of a vehicle. Charges could be filed against the driver of the truck, Joubert told ABC 40.
“Whether you’re driving on a busy highway or a country road in Massachusetts, always be on the lookout for road debris. Be prepared to slow down or safely change lanes to avoid striking the debris. Unfortunately, even the most defensive and alert drivers might not have time to react,” Salomone said. “That’s why it’s imperative that drivers of any vehicle – from pickup trucks to tractor trailers – take the necessary steps to ensure that the cargo they’re carrying is safely secured to their vehicle.”
Salomone said attorneys can help victims of road debris accidents pursue compensation for their losses. He said an attorney can help hold the negligent individual or company accountable and send a message that careless behavior on Massachusetts roads and highways will not be tolerated.
