Springfield to Host Second Annual 12.4K Urban Obstacle Race: Springfield Urban-Warrior Challenge Starts at Hammons Field April 6 at 8:30 A.M.
Springfield, MO (PRWEB) January 21, 2014 -- Springfield is set to host its second annual obstacle race starting Sunday, April 6, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. The first of its kind in the city, the Springfield Urban-Warrior Challenge (S.U.C.) is not made for everyone. With participants running through the heart of the city around iconic landmarks, this race is created to test endurance, speed, agility, and the will to keep moving forward.
Designed by perhaps the most qualified group to create challenging obstacles—the Missouri State University (MSU) Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC)—the S.U.C. is a 12.4K timed obstacle race. It will start and finish at Hammons Field and will again take place in the urban environment of downtown Springfield, with new challenging obstacles that will not be revealed until race day. Obstacles from 2013 included running, crawling, climbing, and distractions such as water and smoke.
“This race is different from other obstacle races as this one is at the heart of the city. You will experience more of this city in one hour than most will experience living here for a year,” said Missouri State University’s Professor of Military Leadership Lt. Col. Troy S. Wisdom. “With many past runners going out to beat their previous times, they might find out that things have changed just a little bit.”
A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the MSU Army ROTC Bear Battalion—consisting of MSU and other students from six area colleges. Student cadets fully participate in the planning, training and execution of the Battalion’s mission to develop and train America’s future leaders.
The race also benefits the National Military Family Association (NMFA), a non-profit organization whose mission is to help alleviate the unique challenges that spouses and children of service members face, especially those of the deployed, wounded, and fallen. The NMFA also guides proud but anxious parents of single service members through the often-confusing military systems to help their children.
Participants can register as an individual or with a team of four people. Costs range from $75-$105 for individual registration; $275-$350 for teams. The last day to register online is April 4. Participants can also register from 12-5 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at the entrance to Plaster Sports Complex on Grand Street or 7-8 a.m. the day of the event at Hammons Field.
Discounts are given for active or retired military, police and firefighters, and MSU students. There will be first, second and third place winners in each age category, plus overall male/female and team winners. A course map, preparation information, pricing details and answers to common questions can be found at embracethesuc.com.
Outside of running the race, there are other ways to become involved. Volunteers will play an important role on race day, from giving route directions to manning hydration stations. Volunteers will receive an official S.U.C. t-shirt as well as breakfast before the race. Those interested in volunteering should email [email protected].
There are also a variety of ways to sponsor, from naming customized obstacles, to cash donations, to donations in kind. For sponsorship opportunities, email [email protected].
