St Matthew’s Cathedral Launches $2.0 Million Campaign with Encouragement from Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings
Dallas, TX (PRWEB) October 03, 2014 -- St Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral will launch a $2.0 million campaign with opening remarks from Mayor Mike Rawlings on October 12, 2014 at 10:30 am. Funds raised in the campaign will be used to update the 100+ year old campus that houses several agencies providing free services to Dallas’ inner city residents. Language literacy, GED preparation, performing arts development, and food pantry programs are just some of the programs that will benefit from the fund raising efforts.
“We are pleased that Mayor Rawlings will be with us for the kick-off of our campaign,” said The Very Rev. Dr. Neal Michell, Dean of the Cathedral. “We are proud to maintain our location in the heart of Old East Dallas, where so many of our neighbors benefit from the out-reach services the Cathedral congregation provides.”
Due to a recent influx of younger members, St Matthew’s is experiencing a vibrancy contributing to the many programs offered from its campus. Some of these programs include:
*The Aberg Center for Literacy which provides tuition free instruction along with free childcare to adults working toward their GED, citizenship, reading, writing, social studies, science, math, and computer skills, as well as people wanting to learn English and Spanish.
*A food pantry serving over 100 meals to neighbors each week
*Saint Matthew’s Cathedral Arts which provides free concerts, art activities and gallery expositions reviving the ancient tradition of the Cathedral being a center of arts activity within the community
*The Summer-in-the-City program which brings suburban youths into the community each summer to participate in urban service projects throughout the city.
*Bishop’s Camp, a summer day camp and educational program serving over 150 students from nearby elementary schools.

About The Cathedral Church of St. Matthew:
The parish of St. Matthew was formed in 1856 and is the first Episcopal parish in North Texas. Originally located in downtown, the church moved to the faltering campus of St. Mary’s Episcopal College for Women at Ross and Henderson in 1929. It has remained at this location ever since. While the church has a rich architectural history with century old stain glass windows and warm wood nave, it hosts a wide variety of community services and events.
