St. Vrain Valley School District to Use Portion of Prestigious “Race to the Top” Grant To Build Student Innovation Center
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) December 24, 2013 -- The St. Vrain Valley School District continues to make waves in the world of STEM education - this time by using funds from the prestigious “Race to the Top” federal education grant to build a student Innovation Center.
The Innovation Center is an extension of Skyline High School and will provide a place where businesses can partner with students to work on real-world problems, teaching students both technical and manufacturing skills.
Skyline High School has recently made headlines as they worked to establish their STEM Academy. This academy focuses on teaching skills in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer, and Mathematics) fields and was instrumental in obtaining the “Race to the Top” grant that will provide over $16.6 million in funds to further the district’s educational efforts. SVVSD was one of only 16 districts across the country to receive the grant.
SparkFun Electronics, based in Boulder, Colo., will sponsor a portion of the Innovation Center, known as the “Electronics Lab.” This lab will provide a place where students can utilize modern technology to build projects for classes, competitions and beyond. SparkFun hopes to replicate pieces of what the company looks like both from the engineering and manufacturing sides, and provide the opportunities for students to learn both both technical and manufacturing skills before entering higher education or the job market.
The Innovation Center will open its doors in early 2014 and will be fully-stocked with SparkFun parts, resources and tools.
