Stanley Consultants’ Wastewater Projects Win Dual Awards
(PRWEB) September 30, 2015 -- Stanley Consultants received two 2015 Top Projects awards from Water & Wastes Digest (W&WD) at its annual awards ceremony on September 29th in Chicago. Stanley Consultants is a global consulting engineering company.
The West Side Diversion Tunnel, in Davenport Iowa, and the Iowa City Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion, in Iowa City, Iowa, were named by the magazine as two of the top ten water and wastewater projects in U.S. The awards program honors the most remarkable and innovative U.S. water and wastewater projects in design or construction over the past 18 months. Stanley Consultants was the lead engineering firm for both projects.
“Our clients deserve all the accolades,” said Tony Mardam, Stanley Consultants Water and Wastewater Practice Leader. “Stanley Consultants enjoys long-term partnering relationships with both the City of Davenport and the City of Iowa City. This mutual client-consultant trust allows us to provide the best engineering solutions in a cost-effective, timely manner.”
The award ceremony was held in conjunction with WEFTEC 2015, the Water Environment Federation’s annual expo, recognized as the largest annual water quality exhibition in the world.
The $42 million West Side Diversion Tunnel, a 3.1 mile sanitary sewer line, alleviates stress on Davenport’s aging sewer system and reduces backups during heavy rains. The project opens thousands of acres for new industrial and commercial development and has been called the city’s most significant long-term economic development project. It includes a 1.4 mile-long-tunnel that ranged in depth from 40 to 140 feet. “This project was one of the most complicated and technically difficult public works endeavors the city has ever undertaken,” said Michael Clarke, Davenport Public Works Director. Stanley Consultants provided master planning, design, and construction phase services.
The W&WD Top Projects award marks the fifth award received by the West Side Diversion Tunnel, which has also been awarded a National Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC); the Grand Conceptor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Iowa; the Merit Award in the Water/Environment Category in the Engineering News-Record Midwest Best Projects competition; and Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Achievement (OCEA) from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Iowa Section.
The $50.2 million Iowa City Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion is Iowa City’s largest public works project ever. The expansion marks the culmination of a nearly 40-year effort to move all wastewater treatment plant operations out of the city’s core. It doubles the plant’s treatment capacity to 24 million gallons per day, and allows for significant city growth while also meeting more stringent ammonia limits. The expansion included multiple process and equipment enhancements that improve efficiency and sustainability. Stanley Consultants led the design team.
The treatment plant expansion has received multiple awards including: Project of the Year in the Environmental $25M - $75M Category by the Iowa Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA); an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Iowa; and a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies.
