STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder Announces New Format and Speakers for 21st International 3S Symposium
DENVER (PRWEB) May 23, 2018 -- STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) will be hosting their 21st International 3S Symposium for parents and professionals on October 12th and 13th, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. This year’s symposium is focused on the theme of Regulation: Foundation to Function and will give participants the opportunity to examine the concept of Regulation at deeper levels: theory to application, role to impact and concept to functional outcomes. Registration for the 3S Symposium and pre-symposium workshops is now open with early-bird pricing available through July 12, 2018.
The symposium will feature a new format and a speaking roster of leading experts in the field of SPD, including Serena Wieder, Ph.D., Amy Lynch, Ph.D., OTR/L, Ira Glovinsky, Ph.D. and Kelly Mahler, MS, OTR/L. Other special activities will also be held throughout the two-day event, including exhibitors showcasing the newest and most advanced sensory solutions, and the opportunity to network with clinical experts and providers during our highly anticipated networking lunch.

Prior to the start of the main event, STAR Institute will also be hosting two pre-symposium workshops, one targeted for professionals, the other for parents/caregivers. Both events will take place at the same venue on October 11, 2018, the day before the start of the 2-day symposium.
STAR Institute has teamed up with local community partner, Building Bridges Therapy, to present this year’s Pre-symposium Parent Workshop titled, SPD: How It Affects the Child, the Parent and the World Around Them. In this day-long event, parents will have the opportunity to learn more about complex issues their child faces, including finding a sense of self, peer relationships, and strategies to carry-over therapeutic gains in the home and community. Participants will expand their understanding and resources with small group discussions, parent-to-parent networking and an expert panel Q&A session.
The theme for this year’s Pre-symposium Workshop for professionals will be STAR 101: An Evidence-based Approach to Intervention for Sensory Processing Challenges Through the Lifespan. This workshop is designed to give professionals an overview of the STAR Frame of Reference, intended to support clinical reasoning when providing therapeutic services to individuals with sensory integration/processing challenges and their families. Theoretical foundations, application to clinical practice and supporting research will be presented in this overview. Video examples will provide additional support for presented concepts and discussion. Participants will hear directly from STAR Institute faculty including, Virginia Spielmann, Associate Director of STAR Institute and Dr. Sarah Schoen, PhD, OTR/L, Director of Research.
The symposium is open to occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, educators, medical professionals, mental health care providers, researchers, parents and any others interested in learning more about SPD.
