Starlite Recovery Center Introduces “Neoteric” Program for Young Men Struggling with Substance Abuse and Independence Issues
CENTER POINT, Texas (PRWEB) July 19, 2013 -- Starlite Recovery Center, the longest running free-standing chemical dependency treatment center in Texas, has announced an innovative new program designed to help young men ages 18-28 who are struggling with substance abuse and issues of independence. Dubbed the “boomerang generation” or part of a “failure to launch” epidemic, these young men often are part of the 29% of young adults who have moved back in with their parents and the 22% of young adults who report current illicit drug use.
The new program, called “Neoteric” (Latin for new, young or modern), is a 30-day, highly experiential rehabilitation program with activities including ropes courses, fishing, kayaking and more.
"The Neoteric program is based on research that indicates that recovery success vastly improves if young men are engaged in activity and find new passions in life – basically learn that they can have fun without using drugs," said Shannon Malish, LMSW, Director of Counseling Services at Starlite. "One of our patients told us he hadn’t seen a movie without being high in five years. This is the sad reality for many of our young people but, fortunately, we can help change that."
While the phenomenon isn’t necessarily limited to just males, some research has found that young men are nearly twice as likely to live at home with their parents than young women their age; they're also less likely to finish college or to have a job.
"We’ve found that if young men don’t know how to do something because they may not have finished school or were too deep into their addiction – whether that is balancing a checkbook or doing a load of laundry – then, they call it stupid or lame," said Malish. "We’re helping them learn these things in a relaxed, judgment-free environment so that along with their newfound sobriety, they can leave the program with new skills that will help them be more independent, contributing members to their communities."
Set in its own dedicated lodge, the new program offers aptitude tests to get the young men back on track with school or a career, as well as dedicated counselors and process groups to help men develop positive peer relationships that don’t rely on drugs.
"Young males today often do not know how to socialize," said Malish. "They can text, chat online, and play video games, but that won’t get them through life. We teach them appropriate social interaction through extensive group therapy and experiential activities."
In addition, Starlite Recovery Center has invited students from the University of Texas to come out each month for a “sober group” to talk about issues and give lessons on situations they have encountered. This interaction gives the young men positive examples from which to draw.
"Boredom is one of the worst things that can occur in a newly sober person’s life," said Malish. "These young men need to learn to fill their time with positive things like school and participate in sober activities. Our program helps them take that next step on their road to recovery."
The Neoteric program was introduced in April of this year and has already had 96 patients.
