Stay-At-Home Parents, MDP Weighs In On How To Stay Employable After Divorce
Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (PRWEB) December 23, 2015 -- The concept of the stay-at-home parent can be an attractive one for many married couples, but it does not happen without its share of caveats. For instance, a recent report from NBC News explained the hardships that many men and women go through after divorce.
The primary childcare giver has usually placed their education on hold and stalled their work momentum. As a result, when they are forced to survive on a one-income family again via divorce papers, it can be difficult finding their footing.
As Laura Tach, as assistant professor of policy analysis and management at Cornell University tells NBC, "There are big losses in income across the income distribution for both higher - and lower-income women. ...Also, just having a single income doesn't help buffer some of those financial shocks. It's much more difficult to balance that out."
Speaking to this frequent problem among divorce couples, a spokesperson for MyDivorcePapers (MDP) noted that when couples file for divorce, the quality of income that primarily women are able to attain takes a hit in part due to the fact they are not only lacking in experience from having placed their careers on hold to raise the kids, but they also have external forces that make their income less stable.
"For example, if the person reentering the workforce - we'll say the mom - is also the custodial parent, she may not have any other option but to leave or miss work altogether whenever her child is ill," the spokesperson said. "This makes it doubly difficult to attract quality positions and employers."
To avoid these issues, the site recommends a series of tips that non-bread winners should be taking now to hedge their bets against the possibility of divorce.
Firstly, take part-time courses, either at a university or online to freshen up skills that will make you more marketable should the divorce bug bite.
"Think about actionable skills that don't necessarily come with a huge tuition price tag," the MDP spokesperson notes. "At the very least, subscribe to the publications that are in your wheelhouse and stay up to date on the job, technology, and education trends that you may be facing."
Secondly, if possible, keep working on your own either in a part-time employment or a freelance capacity. As the MDP spokesperson notes, "Ten to twenty hours a week of gainful employment may not seem like much, but it keeps your contacts fresh and your skills and education active. As a result, it will shorten the learning curve should you ever have to reenter the workforce in a full-time capacity."
