Piscataway, NJ (PRWEB) September 26, 2013 -- The fifth annual Center for Dermal Research (CDR) Skin Workshop will be held at the Rutgers University Life Sciences Building on November 6, 2013.
The Center for Dermal Research (CDR) is hosting its annual one-day skin workshop at Rutgers University’s Busch Campus Life Science Building on November 6, 2013. “We are honored to have six outstanding speakers who will be presenting at this year’s event. They will cover a variety of topics on the use of skin cells in the treatment of cancer and other dermatologic conditions,” said Bozena Michniak-Kohn, Director of the CDR.
The skin constantly renews itself throughout adult life and we are shedding our upper skin layers daily. Stem cells (SCs) residing in the epidermis and hair follicle ensure the maintenance of adult skin homeostasis and hair regeneration, but they also participate in the repair of the epidermis after injuries. During our event the speakers will address the current knowledge of epidermal SCs of the adult skin. We discuss their fundamental characteristics, the methods recently designed to isolate these cells, the genes preferentially expressed in the multi-potent SC niche, and the signaling pathways involved in SC niche formation, SC maintenance, and activation. Finally, we speculate on how the deregulation of these pathways may lead to cancer formation and how stem cells play an important role in wound healing and skin regeneration. The event topic is important for skin researchers & formulators as well as skin biologists in the academia, & pharmaceutical, cosmetic and personal care industries
The plenary speaker for the event will be Elaine Fuchs, PhD. She is the Rebecca C. Lancefield Professor at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In addition to Dr. Fuchs, speakers include: Valerie Horsley, PhD., Elena Ezhkova, PhD., Michael Rendl, MD, Angela Christiano, PhD., and Sarah Millar, PhD.
