Stephanie J. Drew, DMD, FACS, Commences Term as First Woman President of American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

Drew, DMD, FACS, assumed the position of President of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ACOMS) at their Annual Scientific Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 25. She is the 26th President of the College and the first woman elected to the chief executive position.
Dr. Stephanie Drew is Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her DMD degree from the Farleigh Dickinson University College of Dental Medicine and completed her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Prior to joining Emory, she was a senior partner at the New York Center for Orthognathic and Maxillofacial Surgery for 23 years, served as an attending physician at Stony Brook University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and was a clinical assistant professor at Hofstra Medical School and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Drew’s clinical interests lie in the treatment of skeletal facial deformations through her internationally recognized expertise in the areas of orthognathic surgery and distraction osteogenesis. She also specializes in treating patients with cleft lip and palate and has lectured both nationally and internationally on the topics of orthognathic surgery, distraction osteogenesis, cleft alveolar repair, and syndrome recognition in the orthognathic patient population.
Drew has been on the forefront of utilizing computer planning technology to help treat patients as well as to teach residents and other doctors. It is her goal as ACOMS President to bring the latest technological advances in surgical education to the members of the College. Drew has been very actively involved in the committees of ACOMS and served as the Chairperson of the Committee on Continuing Education for two years. She co-chaired the organization’s 37th Annual Scientific Conference in 2016.
Drew is active in other professional organizations in the field. She serves the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) on its Committee on Practice Management & Professional Staff Development as well as its Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination Committee.
Drew previously served ACOMS as Region I Regent, representing all of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in the Northeastern states. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is the Editor in Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Cases, published by Elsevier. Drew also served six years as an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
