Steven Winter Associates Helps Properties Earn the First Multifamily ENERGY STAR® Certification in New York
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 19, 2014 -- Steven Winter Associates (SWA) is pleased to announce that two projects have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification for existing multifamily buildings. Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village are the first and second properties respectively in New York State to earn certification under the new rating system. Further to this distinction, these two projects account for 99% of multifamily space (12,064,241 square feet) that is currently certified in the state and 68% certified nation-wide.
“We are honored to receive this recognition and are grateful for SWA’s help in identifying ways to improve our energy performance and to achieve certification, “ said David Sorise, Senior Vice President of CompassRock Real Estate, “We look forward to continuing to work with SWA to identify additional ways to improve our energy efficiency.”
SWA has worked extensively with both properties over the past seven years, conducting energy audits, Local Law 87 compliance, and benchmarking services for Local Law 84 compliance. As a direct result of the latter, SWA was able to identify the properties as ideal candidates for ENERGY STAR certification. SWA subsequently worked with property manager, CompassRock Real Estate LLC, to achieve certification for both Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. The projects were among the first five multifamily properties certified in the entire country, and are currently the largest to achieve this award. The EPA has offered ENERGY STAR scores and certifications to commercial and residential buildings for many years, but recently unveiled this offering to cater to the unique needs of the multifamily existing building sector.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for SWA to work with a long-term partner and client to achieve a well-deserved award,” states Nicole Ceci, project manager for SWA. “The operations team for Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town put in significant effort and investment towards making its building systems operate well. Winning the first ENERGY STAR certification for multifamily properties in New York is a tangible reflection of that hard work.”
Peter Cooper Village is a 21-tower residential complex comprised of 2,482 units. It is owned and operated in conjunction with Stuyvesant Town, a 35-tower complex with 8,749 residential units. Together they represent Manhattan's largest apartment community, covering 86 acres and employing over 400 staff members.
The EPA began offering ENERGY STAR scores for multifamily existing buildings in mid-September of 2014. Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town were awarded final ENERGY STAR certification within the first month of the application process opening, to become the first awardees in New York.
