Straight Up Technologies Creates Largest Wireless Network Ever Deployed for a Golf Event at 144th Open
ST. ANDREWS, FIFE, SCOTLAND (PRWEB) August 16, 2015 -- Celebrating its 144th championship on the course where golf was born more than 600 years ago, sports tournaments don’t come more steeped in tradition than The Open.
In 1860 The Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R & A) boasted a mere eight professional golfers vying for the title of champion. In 2015,156 competitors and over 230,000 spectators attended, including four days of live coverage by hundreds of global media outlets across multiple platforms. In addition to connecting to all press, partner and concession outlets, The R&A, again permitted mobile devices to be used by attendees, recognizing how vital these devices are to everyday life. To support the new initiative, the wireless deployment requires an extensive and complex network design to provide attendees with seamless connectivity and access to added on-site functionality to The Open mobile application, which includes features such as real-time video streaming, live streaming and video highlights, up-to-date leaderboard scores and an interactive course guide.
Straight Up Technologies is a leading provider of high-performance network solutions for sports, technology and entertainment events in the United States and Europe. 2015 marks the seventh consecutive year Straight Up Technologies served as a provider for the world’s oldest Major Championship. The network build is the largest wireless network deployed for a golf event in history.
“This year’s wireless network is one of largest ever deployed at a sporting event and we are honored to be working with The R & A” said Straight Up Technologies CEO, Jeff Hanks. “We are truly excited to be the network provider for The 144th Open.”
To ensure golf fans watching at home receive the premium televised golf experience, the network coverage to media outlets must also be resistant to potentially rigorous weather obstacles associated with an outdoor event including and most importantly network and endpoint security.
“Right now, weather seems to be our biggest challenge. You can’t always predict the outcome of a live environment, but it’s crucial to run through potential scenarios and develop a back-up plan, and another back-up to the back-up plan. Our goal is to ensure the client and fan base never experience a network interruption,” said Hanks.
Michael Wells, The R&A’s Director - Championship Staging, added, “We are very pleased with the advances in the staging of The Open which we have made in the last five years, leading the way with innovation and the application of technology at sports events. This has only been possible with the dedication and support of contractors like Straight Up Technologies. Jeff and the team at SUT have been instrumental in this process and we are very fortunate to have them working with us”.
To provide that enterprise network reliability, Straight Up Technologies staged 4000 Endpoints, 200 Switches, 355 Access Points, 200 Antennas and 275 IP Phones across the two million square foot, 50 acre wireless mesh coverage at The Old Course at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland.
