1. Get Strategic
Begin by defining goals and types of email remarketing campaigns: Cart abandonment reminders? Purchase association emails? Benefit-driven landing pages and triggers? Welcome emails introducing your services? Product trial upgrade emails? Requests for reviews?

2. Planning is Everything
Once goals are clear, pick email triggers to capture this information for timely, personal emails later. Tackle cart abandonment by emailing a few hours after, then a day later. Second emails often lift conversions considerably. Also, during a product trial, send feature and benefit-driven emails throughout the trial cycle.

3. Messages that Count
Customize plans for the various database segments: existing customers, existing prospects, past or inactive customers, new leads, people who bought X, people who abandoned a shopping cart, etc. It’s too easy for people to unsubscribe if their needs aren’t met.

4. The Look
The email should visually match its landing page. The call to action should be in the HTML — not as an image — and appear above the fold. Fifty percent of emails are currently viewed on mobile devices, so responsive email templates are a must.

5. Call to Action
Using only one call-to-action benefits customers and makes it easier to measure response. Create a sense of urgency when it fits; people respond to deadlines.

6. By Invitation Only
Allow prospects and customers to choose how often they want to hear from you -- not only is it an appreciated courtesy, it keeps your unsubscribe rate low.

7. Follow the Tracks
Wherever possible, track what your customers and prospects do online. Armed with information on browsing or purchasing habits, you can make persuasive offers.

8. Get Fresh
Revisit automated campaigns periodically to keep them fresh and relevant. After the campaign has ended, search engines will continue to find the landing and social pages, delivering fresh leads and initiating new automated campaigns.
