Stryker Estimates Paying $1.4 Billion to Settle Hip Implant Cases
(PRWEB) November 07, 2014 -- Stryker Orthopaedics announced a settlement to compensate eligible U.S. patients who had surgery to replace two models of Stryker’s hip stems—the Rejuvenate Modular-Neck and/or the ABG II Modular-Neck—via its website* on November 3, 2014.
According to Bloomberg**, base payment awards starting at $300,000 per hip are being offered to patients who qualify. Stryker said the $1.4 billion figure represents the "low end of the range of probable loss to resolve these matters." The New Jersey-based medical device manufacturer expects to make most payments by the end of 2015.
Stryker issued a voluntary recall of the ABGII and Rejuvenate models in June 2012***, due to potential risks associated with both products. Since then, patients have filed lawsuits claiming injuries such as metal poisoning, fretting and corrosion, hip implant dislocation, loosening, and fractures.
The agreement potentially resolves more than 4,000 state and federal lawsuits against Stryker, spanning 39 states, many of which are consolidated in a federal “multi-district litigation” in Minnesota****.
