Student Veterans Resource Center Dedicated at TCI College of Technology
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 08, 2017 -- TCI College of Technology has dedicated a new veterans lounge to serve the needs of military and student veterans (current, prospective and alumni). The ceremonial ribbon cutting was attended by public and College officials, student veterans and members of the community. More than 50 guests attended this event including Jamal Othman, Assistant Commissioner for Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship of the NYC Department of Veterans Services; Aldrin R. Bonilla, Deputy Manhattan Borough President; Dr. George Santiago Jr., President & CEO of TCI College of Technology; Philip Getter, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TCI College of Technology; Angela Coyle, Community Relations representative for the United War Veterans Council (UWVC); and student veterans and members of the broader Manhattan community.
The Veterans Lounge is located on the first floor of TCI College of Technology campus at 320 West 31st Street (between 8th and 9th Avenue) and will be staffed by student veterans participating in the VA work-study program. They will provide support to student veterans for a seamless transition from military to civilian life. The lounge will also be equipped with computers and provide additional resources to create a welcoming, inviting and familiar environment for student veterans.
“We felt it was very important to have a space dedicated to our veterans who are enrolled or considering enrollment,” said Dr. George Santiago Jr., President & CEO of TCI College of Technology. “Our country’s veterans possess valuable personal attributes – including self-discipline and a keen understanding of personal achievement and leadership – that make them extraordinarily valuable members of our workforce. We wanted to make sure we had the ability to serve their unique needs to help them succeed.”
“By establishing this veterans resource center, TCI is leading by example on what a veteran-friendly school can do to make the transition for student veterans more successful,” said Jamal Othman, Assistant Commissioner for Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship of the NYC Department of Veterans Services. “As the first municipal agency of its kind in the country, our Department of Veterans Services is proud to support TCI in leading the way to provide a supportive environment for veterans where they can begin the next chapter of their lives.”
“This is just one of the many reasons why I believe in TCI College of Technology,” said Russell Burch, a retired Navy veteran now enrolled in the Paralegal Studies program. “Heading into my third semester, I know this veterans lounge will be a place that can and will help me and other student veterans by connecting us with critical resources for veterans here in New York City.”

The lounge will also allow us to build quality camaraderie and give the chance to all our students to explore the educational and career development opportunities they need.”
