Students Awarded Scholarships to Attend Envision Career Exploration and Leadership Development Programs
Vienna, VA (PRWEB) April 29, 2015 -- Three outstanding students who previously attended Envision programs have been awarded scholarships to attend Envision career camps this summer.
Student alumni of Envision programs were asked to submit videos about their “A-Ha” moment—to explain what inspired them in their program and how they have grown since attending. The submitted videos also showcased students’ creativity, using graphics, music, dolls, and even Lego figures to underscore their message.
Kamryn Hinkle of Illinois was awarded a full scholarship to attend an Envision program this summer. She is an alumna of the 2013 National Young Leaders State Conference (NYLSC).
“Not only did the conference strengthen my dedication towards my educational career, but it also gave me a new sense of character and leadership in all aspects of life,” Kamryn says in her video. “I have had many accomplishments since attending”—including taking the Grand Champion prize at her eighth grade science fair; receiving a Bonnie Barbetta cheerleading scholarship, and becoming valedictorian for her eight grade graduation—“and I owe them all to the new skills and lessons I learned at NYLSC.”
Oklahoma’s Annabelle Harris, winner of a $1000 Envision program scholarship, attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC) in 2012, and returned the next year to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Alumni Conference. She had some trepidation going to her first conference, but, she says, it turned out to be one of the best experiences of her life.
“Our keynote speaker, [students’ rights activist] Mary Beth Tinker… gave the most influential speech I had ever heard,” Annabelle says. “A few years later, I did a project on revolutionaries, and the first person I thought of was Mary Beth. My experience at JrNYLC had been preparing me for that moment—to tell students about rights they had never even known they had.”
Aaliyana Carr of Virginia was awarded a $500 Envision program scholarship. When she attended National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Pathways to STEM in 2014, she was given the opportunity to explore medicine as a career—something she has dreamed about since she was a young child.
“We worked in teams and learned how different parts of the body function. We also got to explore diseases connected to different systems in the body. We did chemistry experiments and built a lung from a balloon,” Aaliyana says. “However, I must say that the life-changing moment for me was when we dissected a cow’s heart. The smell was disgusting, but it was so awesome!”
Aaliyana says that the NYLF Pathways to STEM program gave her greater confidence. She continues to make the A+ honor roll at her school, and is more determined than ever to become a doctor.
