Students of The Glenholme School Participate in Wreaths Across America Tribute to Our Nation’s Heroes
Washington, Connecticut (PRWEB) December 15, 2015 -- Students of The Glenholme School, an independent coeducational, special needs boarding school, joined Wreaths Across America (WWA) and the Judea Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in the yearly wreath-laying homage to honor America’s servicemen and women. The ceremony, held at Judea Cemetery in Washington, Connecticut on the seasonably warm December 12, was in unison with ceremonies held at countless cemeteries in all 50 states, including Arlington Cemetery, as well as locations at sea and in foreign lands.
In attendance with the Glenholme students were representatives of the Judea Chapter of DAR, Sheila Anson, Cindy Brissette and Jane Moore, local veterans Keith Templeton (USMC retired) of Washington, Owen Moore (U.S. Army retired) of New Preston, and Todd Peterson, special speaker and citizen of Washington..
Opening the ceremony, Cindy Brisette spoke of the Daughters of the American Revolution, its heritage and its mission. Sheila Anson conveyed the inspiring start of the wreath-laying practice, which began many years ago by Morrill Worcester, owner of the Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine. In 2007, the Worcester family and a group of volunteers established the non-profit organization, Wreaths Across America (WAA) and today countless volunteers across the nation collaborate with WAA to perform this special tribute on the second Saturday of each December.
Following Mrs. Anson and Mrs. Brissett, Mr. Peterson offered moving sentiments in support of the wreath-laying tradition. He noted, “The call for Americans to rise to their nation’s defense remains. Occasions such as these serve to remind our citizens not only of the sacrifices of previous generations, but of the responsibilities of present and future generations to keep our nation as the model for all.”
With the inspiring words in mind, the volunteers gathered up bundles of remembrance wreaths and set out across the cemetery to find the graves marked with an American flag and pay tribute to the veteran who rests there. Additionally, special wreaths from WAA are exhibited around the town of Washington. The wreaths for the ceremony are prepared with extraordinary care by Painter Ridge Farm in Washington. The beautiful wreaths add to the moving experience for all who participate.
Each year, on one special Saturday in December, the nation pauses to remember and give thanks to the America’s service men and women who valiantly serve in America’s armed forces. The entire Glenholme community is privileged to be a part of this important homage to our nation’s heroes.
