Study Reveals Potential for Gene Manipulation to Stop Alcohol Addiction
Miami, FL (PRWEB) July 29, 2015 -- According to The Spirits Business on July 16th, a new study conducted on fruit flies revealed a gene which is directly responsible for stimulating and perpetuating alcohol use disorders. Humans have the same gene, which is called Rsu1. The study was published in the journal entitled Proceedings of the National academy of Sciences, and has given researchers inklings to explore Rsu1 in humans to abate alcohol addiction entirely. In fruit flies, when the gene was inhibited, their sensitivity to alcohol was reduced. When tested on 1,400 humans, researchers found Rsu1 impairs one’s cravings for alcohol.
The Spirit Business quotes professor Arun Bokde, “The next step would be to look at the molecular function of this gene to understand what it is doing in the brain. It is a potential target to treat alcohol addiction. The gene is associated with a reward system. If you can change that reward anticipation you might be able to modify alcohol related behaviors.”
Harbor Village is a drug and alcohol rehab center dedicated to helping those with drug and alcohol substance use disorders recover. Specializing in alcohol addiction treatment, the addiction specialists at the rehab center are eager to see more studies conducted to illuminate how Rsu1 can contribute to eliminating alcohol addiction. An associate comments, “If Rsu1 has been proven to mitigate one’s tendency for the addictive substance there’s no reason why those in rehabilitation for alcohol dependency disorders should not be the focus of study, since it has already been tested on non-alcoholics. Alcohol use is the third leading killer in the United States. Exploring medications and different methods of treatment must be one of our top priorities to remedy alcohol addiction for the lifetime of those who suffer from them.”
