Study Suggests that Hallucinogens May Promote Drug-Resistant Behavior
Stuart, FL (PRWEB) January 26, 2014 -- Aid in Recovery released a statement today commenting on a recently released study that linked hallucinogens with reduced recidivism rates in criminals convicted of substance abuse related offenses.
The study (Hallucinogen use predicts reduced recidivism among substance-involved offenders under community corrections supervision, January, 2014), which was undertaken by scientists based at the University of Alabama Birmingham and Johns Hopkins University, found that hallucinogen treatments may benefit criminal justice populations. The study found that hallucinogen treatments predicted a reduced likelihood of inmates with a history of substance abuse issues from becoming repeat-offenders and/or failing court-ordered supervision requirements.
“A study like this may seem controversial at first, especially due to the stigma associated with hallucinogens,” said Dr. Michael Lukens, Psychologist at Aid in Recovery. “We, however feel that these results are encouraging, and would be interested in seeing where this research leads.”
Dr. Michael Lukens made it clear that the findings were by no means concrete evidence of a proven treatment option.
“This all appears to be very preliminary,” Dr. Michael Lukens said. “Once we see more data, and can definitively prove causality between hallucinogen treatment and reduced recidivism, we may find that these drugs can be very helpful when administered in a controlled setting by qualified clinical professionals.”
While it remains to be seen if hallucinogen therapy will become a successful means of treating substance abuse and addiction, the staff at Aid in Recovery will keep themselves informed of the latest studies pertaining to this, and all other research relating to drug and alcohol recovery.
“It is the least we can do,” Dr. Michael Lukens said.
About Us
Aid in Recovery is a premier drug and alcohol treatment center. Our approach is defined by recognizing each clients need for a personalized drug and alcohol treatment program. We aren't a hospital-like institution and there’s a good reason for that. We believe that treating each client as an individual is crucial to delivering the best possible patient care. At a busy clinic-like program, it simply isn't possible for a therapist to truly get to know each client and understand their specific needs. To best meet the needs of each patient we treat, we offer a diverse curriculum with a focus on both mind and body designed to meet the individual. We treat every patient as an individual and we work with one patient at a time and guide them to a new life in recovery.
