And while some things—like the jaw-dropping scenery—don’t get old, there’s also quite a bit new for visitors to Mammoth Lakes this summer.

Serving as an ideal base camp for a mountain adventure on any budget, Mammoth Lakes continues to evolve, adding a level of sophistication to its rustic charm. This summer that evolution takes the form of several new dining options, events and activities.

Restaurants
Mammoth Lakes’ culinary scene has grown in recent years, both in quality and variety. Several new eateries are now open for summer enjoyment, including:

  • The Eatery by Bleu at Mammoth Brewing Company’s tasting room has quickly become a favorite of visitors and locals alike. Brewed at a uniquely high elevation, MBC’s beers benefit with a uniquely smooth flavor profile that’s built a loyal following across the Eastern Sierra. And while the beer will always be the star of the show, The Eatery serves up a sophisticated menu designed to pair excellently with MBC’s brews. Menu items include Shrimp and Bacon Beignets, Char Siu Grilled Pork Belly Sandwiches and Braised Short Ribs on Creamy Polenta.
  • 53, Mammoth’s newest eatery in the heart of the Village, is an all day affair. Fuel up for a day in the mountains with a good breakfast, and cap it off it with an artisanal cocktail and a selection from a diverse dinner menu. The stage and expansive dance floor also make 53 the destination for live music and entertainment well into the evening.

Activities
With a range of options, visitors can experience the mountains at any pace, whether it’s screaming down the mountain on a downhill mountain bike, or a leisurely ride on the gondola.

  • The Mammoth Mountain Bike Park is targeting beginner mountain bikers with several new and improved trails aimed at making it easier for beginner and intermediate bikers to feel comfortable on the dirt. The Discovery Zone is the only lift-accessed area dedicated 100% to progression in North America. Three beginner trails, an intermediate trail and an all new skills park combine with a designated lift to provide an introduction to the sport unavailable anywhere else in the country.
  • The Eleven53 Interpretive Center is expanding in its second summer of operation. The first interpretive center of its kind, Eleven53 visitors learn about the natural and cultural history of Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra—everything from the region’s explosive geologic past to the weather patterns so important to the shaping the area into what it is today. Admission is free with a scenic gondola ride ticket, bike park ticket or a valid season pass.
  • The Pokonobe Resort, while not new (it’s been serving guests for 50 plus years) is now being catered by Bleu Handcrafted Foods (the same family-owned operation now running The Eatery), and guests will find an experience true to its authentic Eastern Sierra roots. Set on the shores of Lake Mary, just outside the town of Mammoth Lakes, Pokonobe offers boat rentals, a marina, gathering space and general store to stock up for an Eastern Sierra adventure.

Events
With something going on almost every weekend, the events calendar in Mammoth Lakes offers something for just about everyone. This year, a few new events include:

  • The inaugural Mammoth Lakes Film Festival will screen over 50 movies during a five day run, May 27-31. With films ranging from the thought-provoking to the mindlessly entertaining, festival goers will have a chance to get up close and personal with the work of some of the best up-and-coming filmmakers.
  • The Mammoth Food + Wine experience moves to a new weekend this year, June 26-27. Pairing excellent wine with outstanding cuisine from the Eastern Sierra and beyond the two day celebration includes demonstrations, tastings and culinary competitions, all in the name of charity.
  • USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships (July 14-19) return to Mammoth Lakes for the first time in decades. Bringing together the country’s best Downhill and cross country mountain bikers, the event will again make Mammoth Lakes the epicenter of the mountain biking universe.
  • The Hwy 395 Band & Burger Battle is a new event that stemmed from the Mammoth Food & Wine Experience’s previous burger events. The Battle has teamed up with Fathead Productions to provide a dual battle of the arts: one in food and one in music. The event takes place July 17-18 at the Village at Mammoth. In the weeks leading up to the burger battle, bands from the Eastern Sierra will compete in various venues for the public’s vote. The winner will open the music show after the Burger Battle on Saturday evening. The burger winner will go to the 2015 World Championships in Kissimmee, Florida.
  • The Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. A true Eastern Sierra tradition, the festival annually brings together the biggest names in blues for a four day party. This year’s festival, set for July 30 - Aug. 2, is no exception with a lineup befitting a 20th anniversary.
