Watering techniques for lawns
The best practice for watering lawns is to water them during the early morning hours typically between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Watering lawns in the heat of the afternoon can cause water loss through evaporation. Watering lawns in the evening often leads to fungal problems as a result of water staying on the blades of grass without being absorbed.
Another rule of thumb is to avoid watering lawns in windy weather. Even if temperatures are mild, winds can prevent even water distribution.
The region you live in can determine just how much water your lawn needs. Lawns generally require one inch of water per week. If lawns have clay soil, less water will be required. Dry, windy climates require greater amounts of water to maintain their lush, green appearance.
Watering techniques for plants
Plants, much like lawns, should be watered in the early morning hours between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
The main difference between watering lawns and plants is that plants need to be watered at the base where the plant meets the soil. This allows the roots to get the bulk of the moisture. Only watering plant leaves can often damage the foliage.
When watering plants, do not oversaturate. Too much water can cause a plant to lose nutrients and promote the spread of disease.
When creating a plant garden, be sure to add mulch. Mulch can reduce surface runoff and slow evaporation of the water in soil. Soaker hoses are a good option to use with plants instead of sprinklers.
