New York City, NY (PRWEB) April 22, 2014 -- Sumzine editor Jamie Ortega and Helpsy founder Rachel Kibbe will host a panel discussion and cocktail party in the LES at The303 at Louie and Chan to celebrate Fashion Revolution Day on Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 6:30PM-11:00PM at 303 Broome St. New York, NY 10002. Jamie Ortega is the editor of the biannual better fashion mag Sumzine. Rachel Kibbe is the founder of cutting-edge e-boutique Helpsy. A $10 raffle ticket will buy a chance to win pieces from Loomstate, Freedom of Animals, Indego Africa, Nettie Kent, Bhava footwear, and a seminar from the Ethical Fashion Academy. Photos from Ruvan Wijesooriya’s trip to garment factories in Afghanistan and fashion illustrations from Jenny Mörtsell will be available for silent auction. Hitmaker musician and producer Prince Language and illustrator and funk freak Jenny Mörstell will be holding it down with the jams.
Consumers no longer know the true cost of clothing. The garment industry supply chain is fractured and producers have become faceless. This is costing lives. Fashion Revolution Day is about demanding greater transparency. The panel will question who made their clothes, to imagine the thread from the garment, to the machinists who sewed it, all the way down to the farmer who grew the cotton. This will initiate a process of discovery, raising awareness of the fact that buying is only the last click in a long journey involving hundreds of people: the invisible workforce behind the clothes we wear.
Fashion Revolution Day is a worldwide movement demanding fair treatment of workers in the garment industry. On April 24th, 2014, one year following the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Fashion Revolution Day aims to honor the lives of the 1133 sweatshop laborers killed and over 2500 injured as a result of unsafe working conditions and to create justice and transparency in the global fashion supply chain.
The Ethical Fashion Academy is an educational initiative designed to help build community and raise awareness within the various Ethical Fashion. Focusing mostly on the positive changes that are taking place in the industry, the Ethical Fashion Academy's mission is to highlight the inspirational leaders and movements that value sustainability and ethics for all generations to come.
