Sun Health Foundation Makes MAKOplasty a Reality for Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center
SURPRISE, ARIZ. (PRWEB) April 16, 2015 -- More than 600,000 knee replacements and more than 285,000 hip replacements are performed each year in the United States and new technologies are making it easier than ever before for surgeons to perform the operations with pinpoint accuracy resulting in excellent outcomes for their patients.
Thanks to a $1.1 million donation from Sun Health Foundation donors, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center now has the newest technology in knee and hip replacement surgery. The MAKOplasty is a robotic arm-assisted procedure that helps surgeons reduce variation in surgery while preserving more healthy bone compared with traditional replacement surgeries. Patients experience less scarring with the smaller incision, greater range of motion, a more natural feeling in their knees or hips and a shorter recovery time.
“When conservative treatment options are no longer effective in treating osteoarthritis, these state-of-the-art treatments are alternatives to traditional hip and knee replacement surgeries,” said Mark Campbell, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with The CORE Institute and participating physician with the Banner CORE Center for Orthopedics.
The MAKOplasty procedure has been used on more than a dozen patients at Banner Del E. Webb since it was introduced earlier this year. All patients have responded very well according to Dr. Campbell.
“We are excited to partner with Banner Health in delivering best-in-class orthopedic care with this MAKOplasty technology,” Campbell said.
Sun Health President and CEO Ron Guziak echoed those sentiments. “We’re thrilled to work with Banner Del E. Webb and The CORE Institute to bring this technology to the area. It will undoubtedly help many people stay mobile and independent.”
